Service Description
THE BUTTERFLY CLUB
For children with severe, complex and profound learning disabilities
BACKGROUND
Who are we?
We are a constituted, non-profit making voluntary community group and a registered charity, formed by the parents of James McFarlane and Haysholm Schools.
Our children are very special and have to face such adversity just to cope with daily life and all the things we take for granted. This is why we feel very strongly about raising funds to ensure the provision of opportunities which will improve the quality, value and enhancement of the lives of our children and young people.
Our vision
To provide a summer holiday club in James McFarlane School for the children and young people of attend James McFarlane and Haysholm schools, to reduce their isolation, improve their quality of life and to support them to be able to take part in activities other children take for granted. We want our children to have the same chances and opportunities as other children.
To provide much needed respite for the families/carers that have the challenging task of caring for the children and young people.
Our aims
The summer holiday club aims to:
• To provide a daily club for children and young people who attend Haysholm and James McFarlane Schools during the summer holiday period, operating from 9.30am till 3.30pm each day. Offering each child a total of 8-12 days within either the set junior or senior days (juniors and seniors alternated 2 days one week and 3 days the following week). As well as holding a family fun day on the last day of the service.
• Provide children and young people a safe and nurturing environment with a range of fun, creative and educational activities to help develop their physical, social and emotional skills, providing stimulation and encouragement through a range of activities and positive engagement. Meeting the needs of individual children and young people, allowing them to play, learn and develop freely.
• Offer opportunities for children and young people to socialise with their peers so reducing their isolation and developing their social skills.
• Provide an appropriate level of adult supervision to ensure there are no barriers to children and young people participating in activities, both indoors and outdoors and that their personal and intimate care needs are met at all times.
• Provide much needed respite to families/carers allowing them to have the ability and chance to go about normal day to day life knowing that their child is in safe hands having a great time.
• Undergo regular monitoring and evaluation of our service to ensure that the Club continues to meet the needs of the children/young people and their families.
Our commitment to meeting the needs of children and families:
• Listening and responding to their views and concerns
• Sharing and discussing the child’s achievements, experiences, progress and friendships, along with any difficulties that may arise.
Our Club is committed to:
• Offering a wide range of play experiences and activities that respond to children’s and young people’s needs
• Providing access to a variety of facilities and equipment under safe and supervised conditions
• Ensuring the staff and team is experienced, well trained and properly supported.
